Frome Nursing Home has a kitchen team like no other, a family that cooks for over 50 family members every single day. Not only do they make every meal to each family members preference and taste, but also to the highest visual and nutritional standard.
Exemplifying this, they recently won a four-figure prize for winning an inter-group catering competition by displaying their excellent culinary prowess.
The leadership team at Frome Nursing Home are always trying to find new ways to inspire and drive excellence within the teams, driving higher standards to benefit all the Frome family.
They competed against other care and nursing homes who are supported by the Evolve Care Group and was adjudicated by an independent panel from Evolve. As all the home’s entries were of such a high standard the panel generously decided to give the full award £1000 to all the entrants!
Frome’s award-winning kitchen team: Ben, Alison, Yvonne and Dylan prepared a delicious and homely Cottage pie for their nomination.
Alison, who has been a team member in the kitchen at Frome for 16 months shared why they choose Cottage Pie for their entry.
“Our family members love Cottage Pie! It’s all fresh ingredients, we know exactly what’s going into it. It’s full of nutrition, you’ve got your proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals – it has all the things we need for a healthy meal!” She said.
Ben, who was responsible for a delicately piped pureed version of the cottage pie, did so that those who live at the home with Dysphagia are able to enjoy delicious and aesthetically pleasing food. The Nursing Home’s food quality doesn’t discriminate, whatever a persons’ individual needs. He said, “At Frome we believe the people, the family members, who need a specialised textured diet should be eating just as well as everyone else.”
The competition was judged on the criteria of team working, cleanliness of kitchen, display of culinary expertise and feedback on the dish prepared by the home’s family members.
Head Chef Ben, who was also a runner up in the Veggie for Life 2018 awards held in the Houses of Parliament, described the rushing feelings he experienced finding out his team had won.
“When I found out and told the team we had won the £1000 we were so overwhelmed. We felt we had really achieved something. We’re planning to use our winnings to invest into our kitchen and we’ve also thought about doing a Christmas party for our family members and team.”
Ben has been at the home 13 years and it is the feeling of family that he experiences that makes being a part of the team at Frome so special.
“What inspires me to be at Frome is the feeling of warmth and how it’s a feeling of not being at work but being at a second home where you connect with everyone. Our aim is for our family members to have the best care. We make sure everyone enjoys their meals that they’re of the highest quality at all times and full of nutrition of course!”
The Frome kitchen team who celebrated their 10th 5-star food hygiene rating last year, are soon to be enjoying a brand-new kitchen as the kitchen refurbishment is close to completion.
